When a LA50 breaks, the usual thing that goes is the xon xoff circuitry. you can try to use hardware dtr flow control, and cross it over to the right wires.. You should be able to run at 300 baud forever with NO problems if it gets down to that.. also, someone mentioned 7 bit vs 8 bits. That will trip you up too. what happened with me is that i had 7 bits mark parity, and with that, the xoff appered to be something else. voila, question marks!!! check 7bit/8bit, and parity must be none, off, or space.
